Hello, ZBrush Community!

I’m an aspiring novelist and an ardent but still learning ZBrushist.

As a writer I needed to find a concept design tool that would bring my characters to life so that I could most effectively share my vision with potential agents and prospective publishers. I can’t say that learning ZBrush was easy for me, but I ended up with models and images that showcased my ideas in a way that no other design tool could do. (I now know why gaming studios and movie studios have teams working on this stuff. I lost a ton of brain cells trying to do everything myself!) WARNIING Don’t try to write a 175 page novel while learning ZBrush and maintaining a full-time job!

The working title for my novel is Ogreball: Rag and Bone Warriors. It’s the first book in a trilogy aimed at an international audience of middle grade readers who love fantasy, sports, and rough-and-tumble action. The entire series concept was specifically planned, designed, and crafted from the ground up to be fully deployed in a wide variety of other media, including video games, mobile apps, toys, cosplay costumes, etc. (Although I used a ton of writing books as inspiration, The Art of Game Design by Jesse Schell was particularly influential during my creative process.) I’m currently looking for an agent, so if you know a good literary agent, send them my way!

The image below is a possible cover design for the first book in the series. I used ZBrush, DAZ3D, KeyShot, and Photoshop as well as some assets from Turbosquid, Renderosity, etc.

I needed to know what the main character of my book would look like as a collectible figurine, so . . . a little ZBrush, KeyShot, and Photoshop magic!

BTW, this is the same ZBrush model that’s on the cover of Ogreball: Rag & Bone Warriors with different lighting applied in Keyshot and different compositing in Photoshop.

Here’s a player profile for the main character from Ogreball: Rag & Bone Warriors. I really enjoyed coming up with the names of the equipment in his loadout!

Here’s another player profile for one of the supporting characters for Ogreball: Rag & Bone Warriors.

Here is Grindspike from Ogreball: Rag & Bone Warriors. He’s the owner of the Grindspike Metalworks ogreball team. He’s a very bad ogre.

All of the player profiles and the Grindspike portrait were done in ZBrush and Photoshop. The renders were all BPR renders.
