Keep layers when re-importing OBJ ?

Hi, I have exported my geometry made a small change, created UV,s, Now I want to import back into Zbrush4 and it re-meshes perfectly… but my problem is it dosnt keep my Layers, it merges the information into the mesh.

I have two sculting details layers and one polypaint layer. I really want to keep these separate as they may need to be changed later, why is zbrush baking the info in and deleting all layers ?

If it dosnt do it is there a way I can duplicate the subtool and copy the layers onto my new subtool ?.. I cant find any way to do this. Many thanks

Something I do when I’m using GoZ and I want to keep my layers intact is to create a new layer before sending the mesh back into zBrush. This creates a layer with your changes is that you can toggle on and off, like a pose, proportion change, etc.

If you are simply deforming the mesh and changing the UV’s you shouldn’t have a problem keeping the layers. However, if you are actually changing the topology you may need to disable the layers first, and re-project the layers one at a time. Layers are like complex morph targets and when you change the mesh you are also changing the polygon order.

If there’s a toggle button that does preserve layers, I would like to know, it would help me out a bit, too.

Hey, I forgot to say thanks for the reply, very helpful, I didnt know you could create an empty layer for import. Its still a shame layers dont just stay intact, I just re-did it in the end. So you can project each layer back to another layer ?
many thanks
