Join two subtools (without affecting subdivision)

Hello,
I would like to model a simple teacup but it seems less trivial than I thought (I am a beginner).

  • I model first the main body (it has cylindrlical shape)
  • then I create a torus (the handle).

I would like to be able to sculpt and blend the area where the two parts meet.
This means they must be merged into a single tool: is there a way to do this without losing all the subdivision levels?

Do you think there is a better and faster way to model a teacup?
I tried also with zspheres but I cant manage to join two existing zspheres.
