Lex Luthor Deluxe Action Figure for DC Collectibles. Digitally sculpted by me, art directed and designed by Bryon Webster, paints and prototyping by Jason Wires. Character and depiction copyright by DC Entertainment and used by permission.
wow nice! was this done with zbrush or did you do it in conjunction with other programs?
I sculpted pretty much all of it in zbrush…using polygroups and polish to tighten up a lot of the surfaces…I also used dynamesh subtract for the joints, etc. I did some joint proxy model set up in modo and freeform…and did clean up on all of the joints and some of the parts (including some scibe lines…but not the ones on the abs and torso…those are Dam_Standard and a plastic ruler on my cintiq screen!) to double check the fits and engineering qualities in FreeForm and Modo again… Curve Trim, masking, Dynamesh, polygrouping were what I used a lot of here and built up all of the forms “by hand” with clay build up, trim dynamic, smooth polish, high polish.
Nice job in lex!
I love the legible fabric texture. It’s so hard to get right, so that it will still feel and read when scaled and reproduced. You have nailed it. Dorky, I know, but it’s a special hallmark of your skill!
Nice Job as always Joe!

I think your work is great! My only observation is that Lex Luthor’s head seems undersized for the size of his mechanical suit. I tried visualizing overlaying a body (with that sized head) on top of the suit and I don’t think his feet and hands would reach the boots and gloves. Unless you are replicating an actual toy and that’s how it actually looks, shouldn’t you make the head a bit larger?
3D World magazine tutorial in the works Thanks!!
Head is scaled as it is on the character in the comic. This is the actual model for the actual action figure from DC. That’s what all of my stuff here is…actual models for real toys and collectibles. Thanks for the input!
