Joe Menna Toy and Collectible Sculpts

thankyou for that. . So, what’s the preferred method for clothing so it would print and how would you set the thicknesses? i get how to do it in clay but what do i need to bear in mind with Zbrush??

No air gaps…back fill anything that attached to the main volumes and key and plug details that you want to print separately. Get this book: http://www.amazon.com/Pop-Sculpture-Figures-Collectible-Statues/dp/0823095223 What it shows you to do in clay is basically what you need to do digitally. Thickness? well for a 6 inch action figure…04" is about the minimum thickness I use for capes, etc…then scale up as needed…but never too thin for smaller stuff. There’s really no specific formula or technique I use. I never do two pieces the same way. I typically don’t work with body libraries, don’t kit bash, don’t reuse parts (unless a client specifically requests a gun or accessory from a previous model or we are doing a variant on an existing character). Hope that helps

that helps lot. Thanks. I have Popsculpture. good book. You’ve answered my main concern which is thicknesses in printing. appreciate you replying. :):+1:

That book looks good. Just ordered it. Wish I’d had it when I started doing these sculptures

It is a great book but only touches on digital as it’s more about Trad methodology. That’s why I was asking about clothes and such. In clay you just mark or add strips of clay to define the edges of clothing, swimsuits or whatever. with ZB I was more uncertain since you you likely cant just use say, alt>dam std to leave an edge. I guess it wont print or be poor resolution… ? Can a plain ole Extraction mesh print fine? I was using a zsphere and edit topo to make cloth meshes. It would be great to see a digital version of Popsculpture for folks who want to learn all they need to be able to have stuff printed … :+1:

The reason I suggested the book is that the techniques there are directly analogous to how I would prepare something digitally. A solid traditional sculpture foundation is priceless IMO and allows your mind’s eye to anticipate what can be molded, what can’t, what needs draft, what needs to be keyed out, etc when making a model for printing. to prep them.

I guess it’s also a matter of trial and error too with learning a new medium (for me). But it’s great to able to ask guys like you for insight. I do like doing a clay maquette, just wish I could get them as nice in cyberland…

Amazing!

Awesome work … I am speechless!

Cheers, David

Great!

Very well done!
Still digging it
Bravo.

Hi Joe,
Great work on Maul! I was zipping through all zbrush central images and had to stop and really inspect this one. Before I knew it was you I was going over each image, the anatomy is very realistic. His torso, arms, sternomastoids leading up to his face. All of it flawless. Phenomenal!

This sculpt was from almost a year and a half ago…and having just got Keyshot, I wanted to give it some better renders. Thanks, all…I really appreciate it!

Maul scultpture is better than genuine

Awesome work! Any chance of you sharing your keyshot settings?

I’d like to know more about the Catsuit on this wonderful piece please Joesph. Do you keep the whole base model underneath the suit extraction or slice off say the head and hands from the base mesh and weld that to the suit mesh for ‘water tight’ fit and the delete the spare geo? reason I ask is that I once saw a tutorial on 3ds max where the Tutor deleted parts of the mesh that would be covered with clothes. This makes me wonder if the extra geometry/mesh would be necessary for printing or cause any problems? - many thanks-

Really awesome work! I really enjoyed your presentation at siggraph.:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:sunglasses:

Oh yes you should post more
