Jesse Sandifer's Sketchbook

Ok, I gotta admit - after seeing Ralf Stumpf’s renders of his biomech entry, I got all inspired to do some renders of my own.

I decimated the model with Decimation Master, brought it over to Max, and rendered it in a simple Vray scene.

Again, the sculpt itself took 8 hours to complete.

Hey guys - I’ve totally neglected to thank you all for your encouraging words about my latest work. Thank you all so very much for your thoughts and comments. It’s always nice to read positive stuff…

I’m rendering my big diorama scene of the hero and the big giants right now - looks like it’s gonna take a while to render at 8000x6000 with lots of sss in the scene. (It’s going to be a movie poster size and I need the dpi)…good thing it’s the weekend and I won’t need my work computer for a few days.

Ok here’s the final piece that I just finished after a long two months of work. I’m gonna work on some turntables and zbrush screenshots of the final models too…

Hey man! Wow, it turned out awesome!!:+1:

well spent two months. Every time I see piercings like those on the giant I keep thinking how much it’d hurt if the guy just pulled on them

cheers!

Congrats man! It looks great! What did you render this out in if I may ask?? Keep up the good work

All fantastic work! Love it! :+1:

Amazing work! I like all the small details you took notice of, like the skin folds where he is planting his foot, and nice job on the internals of the neck. All of it looks very well done, and skin is coming along nicely too. I guess my only critique would be the skinyness of the skin on the giant to the right with the nose piercing. It looks a bit more shiny than the others, but thats just me trying to pick something out. Once again great work! :+1: :+1: :+1:

The tattos came out really great in the end :+1:
U sayd it was work for a client so what is this made for?

Ville: Thanks man. Lets just say that most foes of that giant on the right don’t have a fighting chance to even try ripping out those rings!

GregStrangis: I rendered it in 3ds max and Vray. I used Vray translucency mapping (not the fast SSS) and rendered out a refraction element and used it as an overlay in Photoshop to help juice the effect.

Roganski: Thanks!

Aberrant: Thanks for the kind words and crit as always.

Disco Stu: Can’t say who the client was quite yet. It’s a film company. They are using this poster to help pitch their concept internally to their big dogs for a new movie. We did it on spec in order to get a foot in the door on doing some fx work in the movie - if it gets greenlit.

I’m looking into redoing the sword angle as I’ve gotten lots of comments on cgtalk and 3dtotal about that. I want this to be awesome so I’m looking into fixing it for the final.

ah i see
now that u say it the angle does look a little odd as if hes gonna pimp slap
the big guy on the right.

I went ahead and changed the sword angle. Feels better now.

i believe the monster he’s looking at on the right is in the scene. The other monster doesn’t feel as incorporated. I think the angle on him is looking up too much. Also the lighting could be more cohesive between all of them. Think more contrast and focal point. Maybe add a strong vignette to highlight the hero. Very nice textures and sculpt though.

I didnt even notice it at first when seeing the first image but its looking more
practical now. Nice job on the hairs is it photoshop?

yeah, I had to handpaint the hairs cause of time. Didn’t feel like messing with max hair again under stringent deadlines and zbrush hair was looking too helmetish.

i hate the guy on the left! it looks like a 2 year old has cut and stuck a head from a magazine and jus put it there, i hate to be rude pal its jus gotta be said!
change it and this piece can be truly awesome!:+1:

jonnyd’artiste: thanks for the crit “pal”. I’ll delete the dude on the left just for you.

Here’s some final model images of the giant on the right.

Here’s some shots of David (minus the hair - that was painted in PS). Maybe it shows the final angle of his pose a little better?

Wow, u da man :+1:
What’s the dimensions on that composited piece?

Some crits dont need to be so harsh in my opinion …I love the piece as a whole.I do think the further figure could use a little of an overlay layer to sink him more to the other characters light. The model I think is suited but maybe his eyes need to be looking more towards us and down a little…
Fantastic job…
cal

just amazing. When will I see these added to your gallery.
