Jay's Sketchbook (nudity)

Dude, I’m definitely digging that background, and that green glow around his ring. Everything looks fantastic! but I’m not sure if I like the texture on his torso, although its different and “different” is good.

Excellent quality, can’t wait to see it when finished, :+1:

You’ve honed it down and focused the pose. Everything your doing seems very good :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:
cheers,
Gary

I was wondering if this would benefit from an extra prop in the scene so I added his recharging lantern. Not sure if it works but here it is none the less.

I like this but to me the lantern looks a little big.

Jesus, you’re right. It’s freaking huge and I think I need to slow down b/c I’m not paying attention to proportions. Thanks, I’ll fix.

Did you render this in Zbrush or Max/Maya?

I sculpted it in zbrush and rendered with mental ray in Max with some compositing in PS.

Very good overall. some areas that need work are the gloves, which look too loose and have strange wrinkles that aren’t natural. The wrinkles on the abdomen and chest also look forced and unnatural. The skin texture on the face looks awfully flat and the spec makes it look a little plastic. Try to adjust the lighting as well. You have some very hard lights on him. That’s all though. Keep it up.

Super wonderful update…and I agree the lantern is a tad big  :+1: :+1:

Very cool work!
Best regards, Selwy

I am in the process of introducing the environment. I’ll be adding in a cityscape in the background and maybe some design elements into the wall behind Mr. Lantern.

Omg, looks fantastic! lol, but hmmm…something’s a little strange here, I think it would look better if he was standing on the very edge of the roof, possibly on the corner of one of the 4 sides of the building, and would be turned away from the building in his perspective. Then just show a small portion of the building he is on, e.g. - show buildings behind him, maybe a small section leading to the roof e.g. - small box w/ door & maybe a small light right above it, this would be a little far back if he is on the edge though. You could also have a little heater or w/e they have on buildings, with steam coming out of it, which would make the scene look more active. Then you could show buildings further back behind that building (of course he’d be facing the camera). However you do it, I’m sure it’ll look fine :D.

Nice update :+1:

Wonderful! If needed for publication you might crop the image to a portrait manner so that the Green Lantern fills the frame from top to bottom! This is an excellent and well thought out piece!

Yeah I agree with that. I was trying to squeeze some more elements in the background but now I’m just thinking that I’m going to change the whole composition. It doesn’t have the right impact right now. I’ll post an update soon I hope. Does anyone know the best way to break into this business, whether it be character modeling, cinematic modeling, texturing? I’m a graphic designer that likes to do this in my spare time, but I’m so inspired by Zbrush I want to make it into a career.

Here is a bust study I did a while back. I was learning and still learning how to use the SSS shader in MAX.

Here is an update. I think I’ve found the compostion that I want and I’m almost finished with it. I might add some new elements later but for the most part I’m ready for a new project. Let me know of any crits! Thank you for all your comments it really helps.

Dude, that looks fantastic… Ur sculpting is great, and the final image looks jus awesome… wicked job!

the green lighting on the right building front looks kinda off, is the lantern supposed to be held over the edge of the roof? over-all, you could improve the building he stands on a bit, the background works perfectly with the model, the roof just doesnt fit to the rest in style/coloring/lighting… otherwise, great sculpt/composition

Here is a muscle study I’m doing. I’m still learning slowly how to model correctly so I thought I would document my progress.

Here are some refinements I have made to the face. I’m going to turn him into the Archangel. Should be pretty cool. Let me know where I’ve messed up.
