Issues with working in 2.5d

Hey all,

I’m having an issue when working in 2.5d when trying to adjust my objects using the Move tool. Here’s the deal:

I’ve sculpted out a brick and I wish the duplicate this brick across the document space and make a tiling brick texture. But for it to not appear tiled or repetitive I need to rotate, scale, and all that goodness. So when i go to duplicate my object, I’ll rotate it to the desired position but when I go to adjust the location with the Move tool, it snaps back to it’s original state where I drew it onto the canvas. So I pretty much lose my rotation and z position. Anyone have any ideas on what might be happening? Thanks!

When you draw a 3D tool onto the canvas, the z position, orientation, color and material is set according to the settings in the Picker palette. By default the orientation and z position are set to continously scan the underlying pixols. Since you do not have any pixols underneath the tool is set to the z depth and orientation of the (invisible) background plane.

Enabling Picker > Once Ori(entation) and Once Z should keep your rotation and zdepth.

I much prefer using Edit Mode to place and rotate objects onto the canvas. Holding SHIFT, click outside the model and release SHIFT to rotate the model around the document z-axis. Moving along the document z-axis still requires you enter transform move mode.

Hope that helps.

If you are using the Gyro to Move the object, make sure you click the grey ring, not inside the the Gyro. You will then be able to move it without changing the orientation/position.

As Mark says, staying in Edit mode is probably easier, using Shift+S to snapshot a copy to the canvas. If you want, you can constrain rotation through the rotation modifiers in the Transform palette. (Z & Y are also on the right of the UI.) Once set, move the cursor horizontally to rotate on that axis.
