Issue with Parallels on Macintosh

Cause we can’t use ZMapper on Mac yet, I use ZBrush under Parallels 4.0 on my MacPro 8 cores.

But each time I’m tring to use ZMapper I get something weird.

See the 2 screen capture to get it.

Its annoying and I definitely do not understand what’s happening.
Is it an issue with ZMapper or with Parallels ? Is there a workout to fix that ? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Did this also occur with Parallels 3? Version 4 was only recently released and there are major changes from version 3. These changes could be the problem.

You might want to try VMWare Fusion 2. I prefer it to Parallels, and they offer a free trial version.

I know ZBrush probably doesn’t use the graphics card to render in the traditional way but I do some game programming and have to use Parallels and VMWare sometimes… its got spotty DirectX9/DirectX10 support and I assume its the same for the latest opengl support. ZMapper might be using a shader program on openGL that the drivers that Parallells emulates just doesn’t support?

Installed VMWare and …
… exactly the same issue !
It’s too bad

I’ve had on-again, off-again problems using ZMapper with Windows Virtualization (e.g. VMware and Parallels.)

Solutions:

  1. Use Bootcamp (a pain IMHO.)
  2. Use xNormal (free and pretty cool) to generate your maps. www.xnormal.net.

ZMapper requires OpenGL support. The Windows emulators like Parallels and Boot Camp have had a spotty track record with that support.

Actually, sorry if I’m being a fact Nazi, but Boot Camp runs windows on mac hardware natively? So you will have less problems with driver issues on boot camp.

Only Parallels and VMWare will have the spotty OpenGL+Direct3D support issues.

Hope not joking …

There is no problem, I can wait 1 or 2 weeks for ZBrush 3.5 …

hahahahaha

hehe really?! zbrush 3.5 in 2 weeks?! where have I been! that would be the greatest pixologic christmas present ever.

Hey Aurick, is hardware OpenGL needed for Zbrush? I run Maya on both VMWare and Parallels in software OpenGL and it works fine. Thanks.

I ran into this issue also… you need to go the bootcamp route, and re-boot into windows if your are to get Zmapper working on your mac.

And yes it was present as an issue in VMware 1 and Parallels 3… haven’t tried with 4…
