Is Zbrush For Traditional Artists?

Hello I wanted to speak to someone who knows art there to answer some questions for me. I am currently attending a comic and graphic art school that is pretty well known in NJ, The Joe Kubert school. I have learned a lot and things are going well. I am a traditional artist who believes art is a skill that should never be taken over completely by the computer there is a life a natural artist can bring to a character or drawing that simply cant be emulated. I also believe though that one should know computer programs as well and it should be used in balance with traditional art to really create great work. My question was about zbrush, it seems you guys are the only school I could find that teaches this. My main question is, I made the error in my college career before coming here of going to school where they taught Maya which involved alot of computer, and computer coding etc and it wasnt for me, I am an artist and I need to draw and use my artistic skills and only use the computer to “enhance” my work. My main question is, is zbrush right for me? Does it involve coding and heavy things like that or is it built for traditional artists? The work it produces is amazing no question I was looking at the gallery. I am interested in getting into the comic industry as a penciler but also am interested in learning other things to vary my talents because I am lucky enough to be one of those artists who can draw in any style from cartoon to realistic well. I enjoy creating my own characters alot and have a deep passion for art. The school I go 2 is great but I feel like I could really speed things up and be learning more and getting myself in the industry and earning money. Also if you could let me know if there are any internships out there etc? Please get back 2 me thanks for your time here is a few examples of my work!

Zbrush is a package for digital sculpting, texturing and, if you want, even sketching and illustration.
I think that no one more than yourself will be able to understand if it’ll be useful for your way or working
Just try the trial version, play with it, experiment with it.
Thanks for sharing your artworks.

Warmest,

Fabrizio

Zbrush is not easy right out of the box. Sculpting with the clay brushes is very intuitive but it is not hard to get lost and not know why something doesn’t work or what you have to do next. Try the trial version and download the getting started pdf.

You might also try Sculptris which is downloadable from another thread in this forum. It is much more approachable but not as powerful.

You should also try MyPaint which is an open-source drawing and painting program – free download.

But none of these programs are best used with a mouse. You should get a Wacom tablet, or something similar, if you want to do digital work at your full potential.

hi deartz! “digital clay” doesn’t come from thin-air - in my opinion, zbrush COMES FROM “traditional artists”. check out who’s involved developing the program… meats meier was like the traditional illustrator for pixologic - long time no hear… now ryan kingslien on the other hand feels like a traditional artist to me… marquettes in zbrush4 anyone?

you should try the demo!

chem!

You should also have a look at ArtRage. Great painting and drawing app.

yeah there’s a learning curve just like with anything, but i would say definitely yes. most if not all zbrush artists have roots in traditional art of some kind. i started with play dough.

To answer the question in the Topic Title; “Is Zbrush For Traditional Artists?”
That would be a resounding, YES!

Consider that the author of the program is an artist, and consider that, unlike any other app on any platform, it has attracted more ‘‘analog’’ sculptors and artists to the digital platform than ever before.

I’m an Artist/Illustrator and Zbrush has revolutionized my creative workflow.

It won’t replace Photoshop. But it has replaced Painter, for me. Was thinking about buying Artrage until ZB introduced the PaintStop plugin.

It won’t replace a dedicated 3D modeling app, but it has saved me $1800 on my Cinema 4D upgrade, (by not needing to upgrade anymore). I’m not an animator so the version I have combined with Zbrush, works just fine. And, by the way, Zbrush was a free upgrade!

Zbrush is created by Artists for Artists. Hence the ‘‘Brush’’ in the name.
Yeah, the interface is a bit daunting at first, but then so is a Paasche Turbo A-B Airbrush!

Good luck with your studies
