Is there any way to replace the default bruashes?

Hi everyone,
Hya ZBer!!!

I Have been wondering for a while if there is a way to completely replace what is in the Brush Pallet, I only use eight of them and some of those eight I use very rarely, like flatten.
I know about adding brushes, but what I want is to get rid of the ones I never use, and replace them with ones I used to use in older versions of ZBrush and ones I make my self.
As it is now there are about (roughly) 128 brushes I don’t use in there and it’s sort of a lot of clutter. In fact its making me not like actual sculpting as much… now I only use the Move brush for sculpting (and Smooth, but that doesn’t count) and don’t even remember what I used to use before.

Is this even possible to do this?

Cheers! (And thanks!)

I feel the same way as you and this is what I have found.

The brushes in the below directory are what are loaded into the brush palate when zbrush starts

C:\Program Files (x86)\Pixologic\ZBrush 4R4\ZData\BrushPresets

HOWEVER

There are brushes in this directory that need to be there in order for zbrush to function properly. Such as the Clip brushes, the Mask brushes the zsketch brushes ect.

So, just like anything in the ZData folder, make a back up first and edit at your own risk. =)

I have moved A lot of the default brushes out of this directory and (I’m down to about 70) and organized them into the directory that lightbox uses to load brushes, located here.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Pixologic\ZBrush 4R4\ZBrushes

Of course you can add your own brushes to the following directory and they will automatically show up in the default brush palate when Zbrush starts as well.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Pixologic\ZBrush 4R4\ZStartup\BrushPresets

Hi Mealea!

Why don’t you make a custom UI with just the brushes you use and not bother going into the Brush palette at all? There is lots of room along the bottom shelf if you don’t have anything there. You can also widen the right shelf and put brushes in there. Whatever you do, don’t go removing brushes from the ZBrush 4R4/ZData folder as ZBrush might not even start if you do.

You can move brushes from the ZData\BrushPresets but be careful not to delete them in case you need to restore them later. The safest way is to backup the whole folder, so you can restore the complete contents if necessary.

Also, you should be careful not to delete any brush beginning with Transpose, Clip, Mask, Select, Smooth or any of the ZSketch brushes.

Custum UI and place just the brushes and functions you want to have i.e. below your workspace.

There is a nice custom UI tutorial by pointpusher - thanks for this btw.

Oh my god I’m such an ass…

Thank you all.

I should have thought of making a custom menu!

I’m going to go play ostrich now and stick my head in the sand, no one kick me in the obvious place ok?

Thank you all VERY MUCH, Im off to hunt down some brushes!

Cheers!
Mealea

I just wanna add here that making a custom menu is not equivalent to using the B (“brush”) button menu as it’s less convenient. The reason B menu is so convenient is because you can use hotkeys to select brushes from there. For example BCB is clay buildup, BST is the standard brush, etc. Using a mouse to pick a brush from a custom menu seems a lot slower.
