is there a way to just subdivide a section of the model.

Hi, just got ZB2, and loving it  my question is, is there a way to subdivide just a section of the model that needs to be detailed? i am doing a gorilla head with its mouth wide open, for its teeths i had drawn a mask and inverse the mask then use the inflat brush to pull the poly out, the problem by doing that is the teeth dosen’t seems to have eough poly so it looks very chunky, perhaps i can divide the whole model one more time, but then it woud be too much polys and my computer is slow (G4, 1 gb of RAM)… any suggestion on a situation like this? or a good advise for doing teeth would be appreciated.

You can only subdivide part of a subdivided tool while you are at subdivision level 1.

There are two ways to select what is divided but both will result in three point polygons around the subdivided area.

One is to apply a mask to what you want subdivided, then invert the mask (Ctrl+i) and subdivide. The other is to use the Partial Mesh Visibility function to hide the portions of the tool you do not want to modify and subdivide. I prefer using partial mesh visibility but it depends upon what you are aiming for.

If you are staying within Zbrush to create pictures you need not worry about the three point polygons created by partially subdividing a mesh. A little smoothing in edit mode will take care of it.

You can read more about Partial Mesh Visibility in the Zbrush Help system under Modeling 3D Objects > Partial Mesh Visibility.

Also check Modeling 3D Objects > Multiple-Resolution Levels and the zscript tutorial in that section.

TVeyes, You bring up a good point about staying in ZB once you have subdivided by section. I want to take my finished model into another program simply to add bones / rigging and to pose. What problems can I anticipate now that I have created 3 point polys in the mesh? Is there any way around the problems?

Each program handles tris in its own way. Some (such as Max) are actually designed for them. Others work best with quads.

One option available to you is to export subdivision level 2 instead of 1. You’ll export more polygons, but all of those polys will be quads since ZBrush converts each triangle into three quads when the model is subdivided.

Thanks for your help TVeyes, I ended up use the multimarker for the teeth, and i am glad to know that partial subdivide is possible in ZB…
