Is there a way to get your subdivisions back from a saved subtool?

I had been doing some work on a model, sub Divided it did some work on that higher level. I wasnt finished with the model, but i had to log for the night… Saved the model. Logged in the next day wanted to go back to a previous sub level and to my dismay, I could not. Is there a way to restore your subdivide levels? Or a way to save your tool so that it includes those levels?

Did you export it as an OBJ instead of saving it as a tool? SuB D levels save with tools, when you use the “Save As” function in the Tool menu. The only thing I can really think to explain it is if you accidentally hit “delete lower subdivision” by accident at some point before saving your model.

In any event, it’s reasonably easy to recover. If you have an earlier version of the file from an iterative saving process (if you don’t, you should…start doing this always), save out your most recent tool as an OBJ, then load the earlier save and import the hi res OBJ into that tools highest subD level (assuming the tool that you have is at the highest subD level). Assuming the vertex count has not changed, it should import right into that tool and update the model with the high subD changes.

Failing that, you could make use of the “reconstruct lower subD” button in the geometry palette to attempt to rebuild the lower subD levels. It doesnt always work, depending on what you have going on, but as long as you havent really moved in and out of the ZB version you’re using, you should be ok.

Its a good idea to always save an OBJ of your base mesh for situations like this, that way you can always just subdivide that up the proper amount, and import the hig res OBJ into it to rebuild the tool.

thanks Bingo! I seem to be asking lots of questions today… I feel like I should leave a tip, or start calling you Professor
