Is there a way to get a mask to draw completely through a subtool?

Hello from the noob again,

I want to mask an area off and have it mask all of the way through. The issue i have is that when i mask and then work on the unmasked portion, is that is eats into the “hidden” portion of the masked area, creating a bit of a bowl in the masked edge. Lets say for example I take a cylinder, mask off half, rub out a portion of it. The result is that i eat into the area under the masked portion. Do you follow me?

Is there a way to tell the mask to completely penetrate the area?

thanks!

I’m not entirely understanding what you are trying to do (pictures always help when posting problems) but I think that using mesh visibility to hide/mask your geometry will solve your problem.

  1. Press CTRL+SHIFT and drag out a selection marquee over your model. Please note, you can turn on Transform: Lasso before performing this action to use a lasso selection tool instead.
  2. Release CTRL+SHIFT when you have an area of the model selected. This will hide everything but the area of the model that was inside your marquee selection.
  3. If you wish, press Tool: Polygroups: Group Visible. This creates a polygroup that makes selecting areas quicker.
  4. You can mask the visible area by pressing Tool>Masking>Mask All
  5. Press CTRL+SHIFT and tap the left mouse button outside of the model to show the entire model again.

See the online docs for more information:

thanks Marcus, that pretty much answered my question. I’m starting to get some the advanced features down. but i still stumble over the basic features. I keep wanting to skip to the back of the book. I am ready to create. :o
