Is there a way to disable /change the default 'orbit' camera function?

So here’s what happens: I have my model and a background reference plane, one on the side, one behind the model, and I have them ‘locked’ to the straight axis using the shift+orbit snap.

I’m sculpting away (directly front on, or directly side on, to match proportions etc of my reference material), and I slightly miss the model with my cursor, and hit the background, and the whole thing orbits, meaning I have to take the time to shift-orbit snap it back into place. which admittedly isn’t that long but when it keeps happening all the time, it gets very frustrating and time wasting.

Is there a way to stop the pen cursor orbiting by default when it touches the document and not a model, and assign it to another key?
or is there a way to ‘lock the camera’ in the current view plane?

This happens all the time when I’m modeling as well, not just in this case, I always get an ‘accidental’ camera move when i don’t want it.

any tips?

thanks folks!!
