Is it possible to move a vertex in only 1 axis at a time?
Or is it possible to select a face without useing the Lasso type tools?

the biggest issue ive found with Zbrush is the lack of selection tools and minipulation restrictions.
It would be amazing to be able to select a face or multipul faces, vertex or multipul vertex by simply clicking on the faces or vertex.

Its horribly important to restrict a vertexs movement to only specific axes sometimes.

Also, is it possible to select just 1 face / polygon so that i could simply move it, without hideing the rest of the object or faces ?

Hi RobCardIV,

Yep - Check the Tranform -> Modifiers Pallet
(There are also some helpfull zscripts that can streamline this process)

Sorta - The way you present the problem I wonder why you would want to do this at all. Simply shrink size of the editing-pointer, maximnize the falloff(just in case) and we are modelling vertex-by-vertex.
You can also use ‘masks’ to restrict manipulation of geometry to certain areas without hiding/unhiding the mesh, but there is no explicit ‘selection’ of components(edges, face), and why on z-earth would you need them anyway? If you are doing organic modelling in zbrush and modelling by working at the component level why bother with zbrush at all?

Im real picky about keeping my low resolution geomatry organized and even, so i move alot of single pixels and single faces early in the stage. and even with 450 polycount models, Zbrush is easier to work with sense its got so many weighted brushes.

Hey I was wondering the same thing too… I’m trying out the demo and watching Glen Southern’s tutorial (ogre head). I guess it’s the glass is half-full/half-empty scenario. I prefer to select the 4 polys I want to work with, rather than making multiple selections/hides on the other polys I DON’T want to work with (which Glen did in the tutorial)… but that’s the LightWave in me

Hi, I don’t know if this can be of some help, but I found Zbrush to be really precise for my low meshes too : here’s how I go at it.

I use the “move” tool and reduce the size of the brush to 1.

Then I can move the corners of each individual face of my model.

I up the subdivision of my model (“d” key) to check the result really quickly and go back to my low model (shift “d”) to make further changes.

Thanks… that’s a good tip for pushing points.
Here’s an example of something simple I’m trying to do. I’d like to select the 8 polys I have circled in the picture so I can do an edge loop on both. In Lightwave I would click and select the first 4, then shift/click and select the second 4, then hide everything not selected. In ZBrush, it seems I have to keep selecting and hiding polys until I get down to the 8 polys I want to work with… which seems a little bass-ackwards… but then I’m an idiot when it comes to ZBrush

yea the brilliance of Zbrush hides the few retard forgetfullness =p.

I perfect my low res models before even moving up to high res.

It will make for much better animation if nothing else.

Dzip, your right Zbrush is great when it comes to precise vertex movement.
I use that all the time, thankya.

Most importantly.

Zbrush needs a way to restrict movement to specific axis.
Like if i want to move a vertex, or group of vertex only on the Y axis,
Sense you have skewed depth perception while moving in the Z.

I was just wondering if there was a way to select and move 1 face at a time, or mulitpul faces at a time without using the masking function, or the hide / show function.

Can be done without. But Zbrush is all about workflow, so they really need to be there.

This is one of the most needed SIMPLE Features Zbrush needs =p

ya know you can mask those pieces go to masking and hit invert…then click the hide pt button in the same menu right?

yea i was looking for a faster way.
a way that didnt take 20 organized clicks of the mouse to select 4 faces =p
ty tho.

cross your arms in front of you and blink …oops been watching too much tv:rolleyes::wink:

perhaps we will get some cool suprises in the next version of zb?
