For example, I don’t like the hands on my char. I want to copy and paste the hands from the male tool base that comes with zbrush and use those as a starting point rather than spend hours reworking mine.
Sort of…but the time you’d spend doing cleanup would be silly. You’re selling yourself short by taking shortcuts.

Do you need the hands to actually be attached to the arms? If the character has long sleeves, for instance, you can load in the male model, mask the hands, hit ‘hide pt’ under masking, then ‘delete hidden’ under geometry. Then load your model, do the opposite to delete the hands, then append the other hands which are already loaded into the tool pallete. This will only work if the hands can be separate subtools. Still worth knowing though.
I ended up working with what I had. Took longer but the practice is good.
Always best to work from scratch. That’s the only way to learn.
