Hi to all… already posted this on cgtalk but anyway…
I know that it is possible with Zbrush to convert in 3d an alpha image…
but I would like to know if it is possible then to apply an alpha image to a model to cut part of it and obtain a mesh without holes…thanks in advance for your answers
Most certainly!!! You only have to see Meats Meier’s work to see proof of that.
I will in a minute try to find the tutorial of his wire style for you but in the mean time try this…
-
first make sure you tool is a polymesh tool…if it’s a zsphere primitive then you need to make it a polymesh by going to tools menu and clicking makepolymesh button.
-
if you had to do the above…load your newly created tool from the tool palette…it will be called something like pm3d_yourtool.
-
make sure you hit the edit button then load the alpha you wish to use.
-
go to tools>masking and click the alp button…this will apply the alpha as a mask to your tool. if it looks good how you want it then go to next step…if it is the opposite of how you need it to be…click the invert button in tools>masking to invert it.
-
when all is well…I should note that the parts you wish to get rid of should be white at this point…if not go back to step 4 and invert til the parts you want to delete are white. now in tools>masking click the hidepts button.
-
you should be able to see your tool with those parts misssing. If it is what you desired then while in masking click the clear button for better viewing. then go to tools>geometry and make sure you are on lowest subdivision level…then click delete hidden.
now you have a model with holes or whatever you want.
ok will go find meats’ tutorial for ya back in a second.

Also take a look at the Almost Boolean thread by Matvara.
I love it when people discover new ways to do things in Zbrush. Here is another golden technique, although completely unrelated to your question. The Distressed Effect.
if there are error could not be atributed to Meats Meier but to Andreseloy that was who made this zscript. In any case is my own interpretation of his technique and the errors are mine:D
