Is Fibermesh going to be printable?

Fibermesh looks amazing… but it leaves me with just one burning question:

will this be to any degree printable?

i work mainly on projects that get printed and i’m currently working on a piece that needs quite a bit of fur.
even if the underlying masses of hair have to be solid meshes with the outer most detail being a halfway decent looking fur texture that will print acceptably, i’d be in friggin’ heaven right now.

here’s to hoping!

The main issue is the actual size of the hair. Even if it can be printed out doesn’t mean it would be a viable size to remain stable enough for print. My guess is probably not. However I’ll definitely be looking into the possibility of putting it into an actual print and what the process would involve.

Not looking too good so far. Not surprising though. Too many issues; self intersections, strands are single sided polys instead of water tight shells, etc…

Unless there’s something I’m missing I don’t see this happening except with bigger fiber mesh projects, e.g. trees. It would be better and faster to simply sculpt in the fur with some fur or strand type brush.

It would be nice if you could create the fiber mesh and have it applied as a texture sculpt across the model. This would allow users to create the fiber mesh for renderings but also allow them to export the same model for 3d prints without sculpting the fur/hair twice; once as a fiber mesh and again as a water tight polymesh.
