Irezumi WIP

ZGrab03.jpg So, I’ve been looking at this guy… and looking at this guy… and still looking more. There’s something about his anatomy that looks wrong to me, I could use some critique. So here’s the plan. I’ve got hair set up form him in Maya, as well as feet and pants (thats why I haven’t touched his legs, lazy… I know  ). I want the focus of the character to be on an intricate irezumi tatto covering the majority of his torso. I envision him a part of the Yakuza. However, I just can’t get past the general form.

I will just post what hit me as wrong first. Usually when you start fixing things it starts to fall into place.

First off he seems way to wide. Even if you are going for a comic book type look his body is way to wide for his head.

The hight of his chest seems to be to much and it makes him look like he has a small neck.

The last thing that I am going to point out is that his hands are too small for the arm.

Overall a great start.

Hello J, first of all let me start with what i found good about it. Everything for the most part, moer specifically the body i think is great! I dont think its too wide at all, but the area below the navel that connects the thigh and leg may need alittle work. Other than that I like it alot. I think the head is what really needs work i think the eyes need to be alittle further down the head. Keep tweaking it, it’s coming out fine. GODBLESS!

I’m so glad I posted this now.

Thanks for your comments Little D. Once you pointed those things out it was obvious. I made some changes based off your advice, and I feel much happier with the anatomy now.

I really appreciate your kind words as well Corey. I also played with the placement of his eyes.

I’d appreciate any more c&c on the update. Again thanks a million.

Great work.

I think you are pretty close with his proportions now, you may want to check the length of his arms.

I think the main thing now is muscle flow.

Also look and the distance from the bottom of his chin to the top of his pectorals.

I love the quick turn around.

Little-D,

Hey great anatomy-image. Thanks for including the link.

Strange thing thought…arn’t his hands turned around backwards? Look at the thumbs, odd, huh?

I’ve noticed that too about three months ago.

I think it is an optical illusion caused by the lighting. If you go look at this sculpt on the web page you will see what I mean.

With this image they tried to remove as much perspective as possible and light it flat from the front.

or someone messed up bad.

Small update. I tried to think more about how the skin covers the muscles this time around. I feel like it’s looking better these days. I know, it’s coming along slowly. I should probably pose it next, then do more detailing. We’ll see how long that takes.

Very impressive update!

nice model…btw the muscles are cheap lookin muscles for sum parts of the body…may i suggest you to fix that. the proportions are great except for the arms which i think they are too short and too skiny… the shoulder should be bigger compared to the head or maybe u should make a smaller head…my opinion … ure free to do as i say or not.

Yep, it’s about time for another update. I’m really excited about this one because it’s my very first SUCCESSFUL displacement map  ! Before I had been using Maya’s Surface Sampler to generate the displacement maps, and it always came out terrible. He looked sorta like he was made of jello and starting to melt in the sun. I think it also had to do with the scale of the model being to small. So here they are:

Thanks Womball for your kind words.
Pooop, I’ve been struggling with the arms for the past couple of days. I think I’m being too timid with them, but I did beef 'em up a bit and played with the length.
The pants leave much to be desired, I’ll get around to 'em sooner or later. Other than that, I plan on working in some hair and of course the textures. I’m not so sure on how I want to approach the hair. It’ll be sorta short, so I don’t know if I want to try Maya Hair or just scuplt it. Any C&C or any general input would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, yeah. If any one could help me with how to use a displacement map with the Misss_Fast_Skin shader in Maya, it would be greatly appreciated.
