Interested in ZBrush but...

Is there a way to put a 2D template raster on the canvas to use as a guide for creating a 3D object?

Also, is there a way to place guides to make things proportional as 3D objects?

I’ve gone through some tutorials and searced the forum but have not found anything regarding these topics. I’m interested in creating shallow 3D images for carving with my CarveWright CNC machine. This machine uses height map raster images to carve in 3D. It only carves .8" deep. The darker pixels of the raster carve at the top, and the white pixels carve out the lower parts of the image. I know I can make these types of images easily in Sculpris by simply setting up a top view and chooseing [Save Depth] from the options dialog box. It then saves a tiff file. But I’m also interested in how that would be done in ZBrush.

Use the Image Plane 4plugin.

A simple 1 button press will capture the depth of the canvas and create a Grayscale image and add it to the Alpha palette. It’s in Alpha > Transfer > GrabDoc
