Insufficient Memory error with TONS of memory available

For some reason Zbrush is crashing around 21 million polygons. My memory status at the top of Zbrush say 3453 free. Am I doing something wrong? I have a QuadCore, with 10GB of memory running XP4 running ZBrush R3.5. Any help would be awesome because I just can’t figure it out. Btw I’m thinking of getting Zbrush 4, are there any speed/memory improvements?

Steve

what are your mem settings in preferences?

also, I have 16gb and cap out around 21million as well. Time to start breaking meshes  I also rarely hit 21 mill even for high end production work, or 3D prints, so it isn’t really a big deal for me.

You can always try switching to HD sculpting as well. Billions of polygons.

ZBrush is a 32 bit app which means that it can only access 4 GB of RAM whatever your system has. For 4GB, 21 million polygons is about the maximum, though (as goast says) you can have more by splitting your model into subtools or using HD Geometry.

What are your Undo settings in Preferences>Mem? It’s not a good idea to set this above 4 other than on a temporary basis.

Thanks for the replies. I’m glad that I’m not just doing something wrong. That was with one object just to see how far zbrush could go on my system. I have my mem settings at 256 for compacting and around 30million poly limit. If I raise my compacting settings things go south real quick so I just keep it there. It would be so nice for Pixologic to go 64bit. I’m assuming Z4 is still 32bit?
