Insert Mesh texture disappearing

The texture shows up when i draw my IMM onto the canvas but as soon as I draw another mesh onto the canvas the texture will disappear, any help on this?

I’m not exactly sure what you are doing but bear in mind that:

  1. To preserve the polypaint of an IMM brush you need to turn off Colorize for the base mesh.
  2. UVs are not preserved with an IMM brush, so you can’t use a texture map.

“UVs are not preserved with an IMM brush, so you can’t use a texture map.”

Well now this is confusing. I’m following along with Tate’s brick wall tutorial and he’s been able to retain color information when he created his IMM’s just fine with out any problems. How is his color information still retained after he created the IMM?

My base mesh is only one subdivision. If I turn off colorize the texture does not even show up when i drag it on to the canvas.

What I got from your post is that, you cant use uv maps and you have to turn OFF colorize (which ends up getting rid of the color all together). I created uv’s and have colorize on, so I’m supposed to disable both of those? That doesn’t make sense.

The Colorize button doesn’t destroy the polypaint, it simply hides it. Just turn the button back on again to show the polypaint. You just need to turn Colorize off when using the IMM brush.

UVs are nothing to do with polypaint. They are only for when you want to display a texture map (image) on your model. Because the UVs are linked to the number of polygons your model has, if you change the number of polygons then the UVs are no longer any use and are destroyed. That’s why you can’t use UVs with IMM brushes.

The color information in Tate’s bricks is polypaint. The Bricks in the IMM included in the ZBrush Brush palette are the same, and are polypainted.

I am aware of the difference between colorize and textures, I just wasn’t sure if the color information was being retained after I dropped it onto the canvas, which in this case it is. I can’t see how the color looks until after I group split it. I guess that’s better then nothing.

You can turn Colorize back on immediately after inserting the mesh.

I found a fix, forget disabling colorize, just lower the color down to less than 100% Mine worked no problem set at 12 with RGB.

They can be preserved. If you use IMM brush on a subtool that already has uvs, the imm brush will also retain their uv.
I noticed however that if i use IMM curve then, the first spawned model will have the UV’s intact, the other ones, following the curve will have their uv’s cut by polygon for some reason? No idea how to prevent that…
