Insert Mesh Creating Inability to Mask/Smooth?

I found a lovely tutorial on insert mesh (the one in the subdiv layer, not the brush which… just doesn’t work right for me ever). I decided to sculpt up a quick, multi-part piece to test it out.

It all combined well, but there were, obviously, seams. I held down shift to try to smooth and nothing happened. Then I chose the smooth brush, and nothing happened. Wondering if I had some strange glitch, I tested to see if I could draw on the combined pieces with the standard brush, which I could.

I decided to bypass the smoothing issue by just using the smooth deformation. I went to mask the seam, and it wouldn’t mask! NEITHER of the combined parts will mask at all.

Is this normal for using insert mesh? I was hoping to make the whole piece one mesh, then be able to mask and deform it to get poses out of the thing.

insert mesh does exactly what it says, it “inserts”, it doesn’t combine. zbrush doesn’t have a boolean function. you can either retoplogize a new mesh over your inserted mesh, or try the unified skin.

Yeah but that doesn’t really explain why he can’t use masking. That’s weird. I know the clay brush is supposed to be best suited for blending seams between two meshes like that. Not sure what the deal is with your masking.

Use the beta version of 3D coat, to combine 2 meshes.
You can find it on their forums.
