Improved matcap baking workflow

I don’t know where to post this, so Imma post it here.

But I’d really like to see an improved matcap baking workflow. Right now to bake matcaps effectively you basically have to use the Zapplink through a few tricks, its time consuming, requires alot of manual set up.

I was thinking it’d be cool if, right in the viewport, you had like a ‘Bake Matcap’ brush. And when you painted on the model with it, it basically would just project the current matcap from the current angle straight into the polypaint. So then you could do a brush stroke down the front, flip the model around, stroke down the back, flip the model to get a stroke down either side, then your done. If you had a few odd nooks and crannies to get matcap baking into, or if you wanted to get a matcap baked onto a certain spot of the model, from a certain angle, just look at the model from that angle and put a stroke on the model right there.

I think the matcap baking is a way more powerful function than most people recognize it for. It’s become an essential component of all skins I create for video games.

We’re probably going to have to wait until Zbrush 4 for that since they’re fundamentally changing the way it all works from the ground up with their new texturing system. During this version several of those features are currently not working or disabled at the moment during the switch over to the “new ways” we’ll be seeing in Zbrush 4.

So if you’re patient enough, you’ll be getting this feature soon enough. (although it can’t come too soon as Matcap Baking is also a giant part of my zbrushing as well and yes currently I have to use Zapplink or my laptop which has an older version to get it to work.)

Long post short, what you want is on it’s way and in a fashion that will probably be even easier and pain-free than you’re asking for, they’re revolutionizing the way Zbrush handles projections and texturing in the next version with many massive and fundamental changes to how the system works at it’s very core. We won’t even remember the old way of how things were done, now all we need is patience while we use these workaround or older versions, I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

patience…

GAAAAAHHHHH I WANT IT NOOOOOOOOWWWW
