importing OBJ (answered)

hi
is there anyway to import an OBJ object to an existing ZTool ?
I created a ztool out of several sub objects, but later needed to add more objects to this ztool. Normally one can import several objects and append them, but what if I want to add objects " obj" to an existing ZTOOL ??
thanx alot

You can do it this way:

  1. Select the Polymesh3D [Star] ztool in the Tool palette.
  2. Import the OBJ.
  3. Subdivide the OBJ until the number of levels is the same as the mesh you want to add it to. Set to highest level.
  4. Switch to the mesh you want to add to and set to the highest subdivision level (so now this and the imported mesh are at the same level).
  5. Press Tool>Geometry>InsertMesh and select the imported mesh from the popup.

HTH,

I am new to zBrush myself. I am struggling with the import of objects into a scene. In Maya and Max when you import your objects they come into the existing scene. In zBrush I don’t understand how to use a .ztl or object tool and how to keep adding objects from Maya into the scene. I bought the Gnomon dvd for Character Modeling for NextGen Games by Richard Smith.

He makes all his part in Maya and brings them into the scene where he has sculpted a male character. But there is now explanation on how the heck you bring them in.

So what I would like to know is does your existing scene (character) need to be a ztl file in order to import the other objects into the scene for sculpting.?

I tried importing each one but what ever object was visible prior to the new imort has now disappeared??

Any help would greatly speed up my current work flow which now at a stand still.

Cheers

BldRnr,

Once you have imported an OBJ you add it as a subtool to your main mesh. To do this:

  1. Select your main mesh in the Tool palette.
  2. Press Tool>SubTool>Append and select the OBJ from the pop-up.

The plugin SubTool Master makes this easy with its MultiAppend function. The plugin is available from the Download Center.

Also you may find it useful to take a look at the ZClassroom videos:

Thanks, I don’t have that plugin yet.
