Importing Heavy mesh Obj from Maya

I have a 938k zbrush poly at lev 4 I am trying to import to maya. But Maya crashes when trying to import it, its about 150meg poly. At lev 3 it imports fine and is about 40megs.

Just for kicks I went to a friends C4D box and imported the lev 4 mesh with ease and actually imported in about 10 seconds. I also tried importing the lev 4 in both a PC and OSX maya and both crashed. Has anyone else had problems importing a heavy Obj into Maya? Appreciate any ideas… Thanks

As I do not Maya this is just a suggestion.

I could imagine the UV data associated with high resolution models could cause problems when importing into other programs. By stripping the UV data from the .obj you get rid of nearly 2/3 of the data. This might help when importing into Maya.

To remove the UV data when exporting from ZBrush:

  1. Select your tool and the subdvision level to be exported.
  2. Disable Tool > Export > Txr and press Tool > Export

If that does not work you can also try exporting with Tool > Export > Grp (Export Sub Groups) disabled.

I was thinking it was UV based as well since I noticed when applying AUV tiles, that “version” of the model seemed to be the one causing difficulties, I did not know how to strip it of the UV’s though so this is a big help… ill know soon if it is successful, thankssss!

That definitely did the trick, It’ll make making displacements a little bit trickier since I seem to only have good results with Zbrush’s AUV tile method, but im sure ill figure it out. Thanks again!
