Importing does not import new UV's in 3.5r3 (solved!)

Forgive if this is posted somewhere else. I have been looking for 2 hours and can’t find anything…

I have worked my high res to a point i am ready to need uvs (texture mapping) but i want to change the uv layout i have. I export an obj and import to maya. I only touch the uvs, and only move and scale them - no cutting or reunwrapping or anything else… I export into an obj file. I import into 3.5 and the import does not import the new uvs.

I have also tried to use .ma format…

Is there and option or check box soemwhere that i am missing? I am used to 3.1. I can do the “project all” work around, but that is a huge time waster and doesn’t always give the cleanest projections…

Which subdivision level are you exporting from ZBrush? UV’s can only be changed at level 1, so if you’re exporting any other level you won’t get results.

I have the same problem.
I export subtool at level 1, take it to Maya, create UVs, bring it back and no UVs are brought back into zBrush 3.5r3.

If I import the obj by itself and not into a subtool, the UVs came through just fine. I tried to delete the UVs on subtool and then bring the UVed mesh as obj. back in, but the UVs are still missing after import.

I also noticed that the creasing of the edges is maintained when I import obj into active subtool, which is great.

Anyone knows what the catch is and how to make this feature work again?

Thanks!

Hey fogmann, that is the problem i have noticed too. I did all the same steps…tried doing it everywhich way…

i was hoping i was just missing a button…

I confirm. I have the same problem.

  1. Exported model at level 1.
  2. Imported into Maya 8.5 and transferred UVs by component and deleted history so UVs would stick.
  3. Reimported obj back in to ZBrush and got no new UVs.

Anybody else???

Mike

I checked my Maya obj import settings and had forgotten to switch off the
“CreateMultipleObject” button under the Maya obj import settings.

This used to just explode your model when you brought it back into ZBrush but I guess now it just auto fixes the vert order but will not bring in the new UVs.

Once I unchecked that box, reimported, put new UVs on ZB exported obj. and brought it back in the UVs came in fine.

awesome. just tested your method and it worked for me. Hopefully this is the wy and not just a lucky fluke! hehe… This willl speed up my work flow now that i dont have too keep worrying about having to clean up the mess that occurs when projecting…
