Imported .OBJ cannot create Undo History in ZBrush

Hi folks,

I tried searching around for this but I couldn’t seem to find an answer (hopefully this is the right forum, too).

Basically, after importing a base mesh from Maya into ZBrush via .obj format, the object can be edited with brushes and such but does not save any sort of undo history keeping me from reversing any of the changes I make. There are also times where the object will not allow symmetry to be activated either. I have tried exporting and importing several times, re-meshing the base in zbrush via dynamesh, qremesher, and decimation master, as well as trying to GoZ the mesh directly from Maya, all of which have yielded no successful results. I have also tried saving and reopening the file after importing prior to making any changes and this seems to corrupt the file so that it cannot be opened again. I am using ZBrush 4r5 on OSX Mountain Lion if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance!

Have you checked the settings for Undo History under the Preferences menu? You can set the max number of steps and whether Undo History is saved when you save a project. They are there so you can reduce memory usage if you need to.

I have not had this problem with my imports and I can’t see that you are doing anything wrong. I can say that I import by putting a Polymesh 3d Tool into the document and hitting edit first. That adds an Import sub-pallet to the bottom of the Tool Pallet which gives you some options to weld duplicate vertices and the like. Maybe that workflow, if that’s not your workflow, has some effect on Undo History.

Hi unclecharlie,

Thanks for the reply. Your solution works perfectly! I was able to import and convert to dynamesh with no issues thus far! I also found that if I try to open the .zpr file from the folder by double clicking it the file says that it is corrupted, but if I open from the File->Open menu inside of ZBrush it works. I’m not really sure why that happens but as long as it doesn’t cause any problems then I suppose it’s fine lol.

Thanks again!
