import .obj size off

I’m using zbrush 3.2 for mac on a macbook pro, 15". I am also using MAYA Unlimited 2009. I’m certain this has been brought up a million times, but I can’t seem to find a thread with the exact issue for some reason.

I’m using GO-Z at home, but will need to use the P.C version in the next few weeks to import/export UV’s and I won’t have access to GO-Z at that point (which is sad because it’s amazing).

My issue is that When I go to my lowest subdivision level and export it as an .obj file, set up UV’s in MAYA and then import it back into Z-brush, I get the following…

  1. If I try to just import it back into the lowest subdivision level, it crashes z-brush. I don’t touch the model except to set up the UV’s. No cutting or moving verts. I can’t even get to the point where it comes in and then you see it’s messed up with the model exploding everywhere when you go up subdivisions. It just crashes z-brush consistently.

  2. If I bring the mesh back into z-brush without overwriting it into the lowest subdivision, it’s really small. If I want to transfer details, I can move it around manually, but that’s not the greatest. When I did this process in MAX, it brought it back into z-brush at the correct size and I did the whole, “append as subtool/transfer details” to great success.

What I’ve ended up doing is exporting the low version into MAYA, setting up the UV’s and then exporting the high res into MAYA and then exporting both of them out separate and bringing them into z-brush and doing all my baking there.

Could someone give me a heads up as to what box I’m missing that’s resizing my obj when I export it out of MAYA? Thanks for your help with this issue and thanks to Pixologic for GO-Z. I’ll be making great use of it when it comes to the P.C in a few weeks.

What if you store a morph before you import your OBJ back in?

Hi Dustin,

That would work fine except when Itry to re-import/overwrite the bottom subdivision, it just crashes zbrush. Otherwise, the morph would be great. Is there a way to make a new object morph into one you have already? It’s exactly the same, but just a different size. The crash issue is bugging me because I had no issues with re-importing onto to the low subdivision when I was using past versions on the P.C.

As a result, I just try plan B. and select the star object and import the mesh back in by itelf as a new .obj file. Everything is fine, but the object is really small. I guess I could try some things like the zproject brush after I get it almost lined up for baking out the detail, but I would just like to understand a cleaner solution and why this is happening/how to prevent. Just for knowledge sake.

Thanks so much for the suggestion thus far.
