import/export scaling issues

Ok, I KNOW this has surely been dealt with before, and I’m just missing it or not doing the right searches to bring up the needed results, but since I’m not finding what I need, here goes…

I regularly build models that are add on’s for existing models in my company’s catalog. If I import a model, build on top of it and save out obj’s and textures without closing zbrush, my scales are all good. However, if I save a ztl of that work, close and reopen Zbrush then load that ztl file to continue working, the scale of everything in the file is increased to about twice that of the original model. It’s hard to catch this, too, since loading the ztl, everything looks fine unless I export it and check it against the original in Maya, or import a copy of the original into a new subtool, where it will show the scale issue plainly.

While I have found some workarounds for this, it is an incredibly irritating problem to have to deal with as often as I do. If there is a setting I’m missing, a plugin I need (as was the case years ago for Poser developers) or some fix I"m just not getting, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know ASAP so I can stop wasting time on this. Thanks!

Have you tried the ‘Scale Factor’ in Tool:Export? If its set to 1 and you export at twice the size, then set it to .5. Just a hunch.

I work with a lot of 3d scanning and 3d printing. My scaling is very important and I’ve run into scaling issues at times. I’ve setup a workflow that keeps all my models the same scale in Zbrush and through GoZ to other programs like Blender.

What I did was setup a ZTL file with a 100mm ring (100mm is a good basic size for most of my projects). First thing I do with all my scan data and other 3d models is I’ll open the 100mm ring file. Then I’ll import the new data into Zbrush. Since the 100mm ring is my default starting subtool all other subtools (models) are imported and adjusted to my preset size (the 100mm). This maintains a constant scale between all my models. This is very vital to me as I scan and print in 3D. When I bring a new model in I don’t have to worry if it’s the correct scale or not.

Care to share the ring?
I really wish units worked differently than they currently do. (As do many others I’m sure.)

Here’s the 100mm ring file. Just load the tool and then append other models into it. This maintains a decent size for most of the 3d prints I do. If there’s any questions or problems let me know.
