Import/Export Problems

Hi everyone,
I have some problems with my import export through zbrush and maya or 3dmax,
Actually when I want to export my mesh to maya, I use PUV and 2048 or 4096 resolution, and then I export texture map and displacement map using *.ma
When I import my object in maya and render it, the scene looks so smoothed up, and I can’t have my sharp edges in maya,
I know zbrush for some time, and I don’t have problems in zbrush env. but since I’m very new to Maya, it’ll be so great if you please tell me in detail to what to do…
unfortunately I cant upload my renders right now, but I’ll try my best to show it in here…

It would help if you could post some pictures of your problem such as what the mesh looks like in both zbrush and maya, your displacement settings, what renderer are you using (ie maya software renderer or mental ray?), import/export settings and etc. Also, what version of maya and zbrush (i’m assuming zbrush4) are you using?

Without knowing these things it is hard to pinpoint the exact problem. However, I will say that by default Maya uses the Maya software renderer and Maya software displacement, while most people tend to render displacement in Mental ray as it usually provides better results. The .ma fileformat should setup the displacement, but I believe it probably sets it up for mental ray displacement. So what may be happening is a) you’re using the wrong renderer (should be using mental ray) or b) maya software displacement may be conflicting with the mental ray displacement c) something else entirely that I can’t really help you with until I have more information on your settings and etc.

So if one of these are indeed the problem, then there are a few things you should check. First, make sure you are rendering in mental ray. To do this open the render settings and make sure mental ray is selected as the renderer from the pull down menu. If you don’t see mental ray as an option then you need to go to window -> settings/preferences -> plug-in manager. Then scroll down until you see Mayatomr and make sure loaded and auto-load are checked. After that go back to the render settings and choose mental ray. Also, if the mental ray plugin was not already loaded, the .ma fileformat may not have been able to set the displacement settings so you may need to re-import the model after enabling mental ray. Once that is done you could try rendering again to see if that fixed the problem. If not then there is likely a conflict between the maya software displacement and mental ray displacement.

Next you need to make sure that maya software displacement is disabled so that it doesn’t conflict with mental ray’s displacement. So select your mesh that you want to use displacement on, open the attribute editor (press ctrl + a to toggle it on or off) and open the displacement tab. Now uncheck Feature Displacement (you will need to do this on all objects that you are using displacement on). Now try rendering your model and see if things have improved. If that helped then you can further adjust the displacement settings through the mental ray approximation editor under window -> rendering editors -> mental ray -> approximation editor.

Thank you so much for your reply, I chose mental ray as my render engine, and maps were located precisely, but I think it’s about the second problem you mentioned, I must try to disable maya displacement to see how things work, I’ll take some photo snaps today from work and it’ll be great if you look at them later.
Again thank you for your help:sunglasses:small_orange_diamond:+1:

I use zbrush 3.5R3 and maya 2009.
