Import a 3D model containing groups into ZBrush as subtools, not as one model

Hi,
I have a model from a 3D package, which is a combination of groups. E.g. a ship, the main body is separate, the metalic parts are grouped separately… If I were to shade it in Maya I would just select the group and apply the shader.

I need to import it to ZBrush as separated as it is in Maya, and paint each part of a the model separately.
When I import it now, I get the whole thing as one object.

Some 3d models I got from internet in obj format, already split, so when I import them in Maya, they come in split. I can handle each part separately. When I get them into ZBrush, it’s one piece.

I must be doing something wrong. How do I get ZBrush to treat each separate part as …a separate part, a subtool.
Thank you for your help

Look at in “PolyFrame” mode, if it has multiple polyroups then use the “Split Groups” function.

There is also an option under “Zplugin > FBX ExportImport > Options > Import Mats as Subtools”. If you assigned separate materials to the groups in Maya you could then import the materials as subtools via this plugin.

Also, if all of the parts that you have are actually separate elements (not welded) that have been combined. You can just use “Tool > Subtool > Split to Parts” on it.
