I'm looking for tutorials on sculpting scales - lizard/dinosaur/etc

Hello,

I’ve been looking around ages for any tutorials on creating scales, as I want to start a dinosaur project. Do you know of any detailed tutorials you could suggest?

So far my efforts look quite bad. I end up trying to use one of two alphas at differing degrees of strength and size, but the over all look tends to be very monotonous. If you take a look at this guys thread about the Dinosaur Revolution tv series, it shows how wonderful it can look, I’ve just got no idea how to go about doing something along the same lines…

I’ve managed to find a couple of the Digital Tutors website, but they aren’t very in depth and I was hoping to find something with a lot more details.

Can anyone help?

Also, sorry if I’ve posted this is in the wrong place. It was either here or the trouble shooting section. :stuck_out_tongue:

im not too sure of where you can get a really good tutorial but i can give ya really good tip. this was something passed on from cesar decol, he said that if you really want to learn scales and understand them you should try sculpting an alligator or croc. theses types of reptiles have all the different scale types i believe. i can also say that the general construction is like a brick wall. get as much reference as you can and that will help you with the look and feel of particular scale types. you will also have 3 sizes of scales too. large medium and small which have their particular functions. when you sculpt the scales you wanna work large to small. the large scales are kind of the armor where the medium size are i believe working towards making the skin looser. thats where the small scales come in. small scales are found near joints and areas that require mobility. i hope this helps. when you think of laying the scales down think directionality and function. that will get you a long way.

That’s a great idea! And some nice info too! Thank you so much! :+1:
