Hi Bonecradle,

This last render turns your piece into a magnificent whole.

I wondered to myself why this simple adjustment in lighting makes such a difference - which led me down the following thought path.

A long time ago (in my days as a student of painting) I had a flash of insight about perspective: really,it’s a system for unification, a method of tying each of the elements of a work to the others (beyond the obvious power that perspectival projection has to create deep, realistic space.)

In this last render, the light and shadow system does the same thing. You achieve a unity and coherent drama that the earlier renderings somehow lacked. There is also a kind of “force” from the left that overcomes the symmetry of the centrally placed figure… and because of that the picture takes on a dynamic drama, a sense of some great anticipation.

Anyway, that’s how I explained it to myself. You’ve taken something very good and with light, made it great.

A fantastic piece of work. You really have raised the bar.
The only thing I would say is that the figure is lit by a warm yellow light but the sky is gray. Maybe if you made the BG sky more of a moody sunset, with hints of orange/yellow everything would fit even better?

BC, I have been watching this images and it’s predacessors (sp?) since you started and I have to say that whoever turned this final image down should be quartered and dismembered and dragged thru the town square. You did one of the more fantastic jobs on this piece than any I have seen in a while. Very clean modeling and even the 1st one on this thread is great!!! but the latest improved version is even better. So I hope you didn’t take that other gallery’s slap in the face too hard. You deserve to be in any gallery you post to, especially with this level of artistry and technical know how. :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: This level of work is the driving force that gives people like me something to aspire to achieve. Thanks people. This picture took a lot of sustained focus and energy, even through the monotonous times, so your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Pilou: is that a subtle way of telling me to stop fiddling? I promise you, this one is well and truly tucked into bed now and you won’t have to endure another version, though it seems you have the options pretty well covered :wink: :smiley:

Sven: true words and I have just read the same in a book on lighting and rendering. I think it is time for me to take conscious control of these sorts of visual tools and cues, rather than leaving it all up to chance.

Ron and Cwahl: I’m glad if people enjoy looking at my work and get something out of it. I know I get a lot of inspiration from other’s pictures, but when I look at my own I see mostly the flaws - maybe it is the artist’s conundrum. (Oh, and the latest version was accepted - a small triumph for my ego :slight_smile: )

But you will discover than a variation of a project some worked is rarely better than the first :slight_smile:

I like the warm light bathing your image and the shadow on your pitch fork is a nice touch. This adjusted value change cuts down on some of the attention that the pitch fork was getting (partially because of the light value of the handle and also because of its sharp detail). All the values in the image are improved. You got a few hints and you ran with it, 100% improvement.

The only place that I can see a need for improvement, and this is nitpicking, is the clouds. You could lose the little cloud behind the pitch fork. The clouds to the right are a bit spotty, you could unify them. You do have a penchant for skinny clouds.

You might feel a bit put upon by your image, but what a great learning experience and you did so well. This time I say congratulations.
