I am using Zbrush 3.1
Could someone please tell what the ideal mem settings in preferences would be for a system with 3 gigs of ram. Right now I have it set for… Compact Mem-1024, Doc Undo-4, Tool Undo-10, MaxPolyPerMesh-8, HD Preview MaxPoly-6. Thanks!

I’d change CompactMem to 2000 and Tool Undo to 4. MaxPolysPerMesh should be able to be bumped up to 12 or maybe even 16. (Although working with smaller sizes is still better.)
Thanks aurick ! I will give that a try. Although 4 tool undo’s isn’t much for a noob like me, I’ll set it that and just save the tool more often. Thanks again.
The way that the Undo settings work is that this is the minimum number of undo’s that ZBrush will keep on hand. It will try to keep more, but will start removing them when they would negatively impact performance.
So even though the setting is at 4, you might have quite a few more than that available.
But saving more often and incrementally is a solid workflow habit, period. 
It’s good to cultivate that habit early.
