I Put a Hole in my Model, Now What?

I was messing around with mesh extraction, and I accidentally put some holes in my model. Is there a way to merge everything back together? The holes are around the jawbone area.

you would have to retopo the mesh to close the hole.

how do i retopo the mesh? =(

it’s a complicated process. You’ll need to check the wiki, or do a search for how to retopo…there are tons in here. NickZ and cannedmushrooms have some up on Veoh as well I believe

If you have saved an earlier version without holes (even if you have sculpted on it it since) you have an alternative. Load your earlier mesh and delete all the levels but level 1 (the lowest res.) Then attach your current (with holes) sculpture as a subtool and use the “Project All” technique to transfer your details to the earlier, hole-free mesh. Keep subdividing and projecting until all your detail levels are transferred to the mesh.

You’ll probably pick up artifacts where the holes are, and you might need to touch up with the Zproject brush. I usually have to do 15-20 minutes of cleanup after projections, but if I already have a topology I like (e.g. a mesh without holes) I find it faster and more risk free than ZB’s retopo tools (which can be fussy.)

Cheers!
