i need help with the reconstruct subdivision

hey i’m having trouble with one of my models. i want to delete the hands so i’ve hidden them and then gone to the delete hidden function. to use this i have to go to the lowest subdivision but there arnt enough polys at the lowest level for the cut to be accurate enough and it ends up deleting half of the forarm. so i figured that i could just delete the lower subdivisions and then delete the hidden geometry… the only problem is that when i do this i cant then reconstruct the lower subdivisions. i realy need the low subdivisions for posing my model. if anyone can think what might be doing wrong i would appretiate the help.

oh yeh heres a sneek peek at my concept for what i’m working on if your interested:D

Looks cool and gory

Don’t know if this will fix your problem:

if you delete geometry you probably destroy your uv’s and they are necessary to reconstruct the model… so apply whatever uv’s and try to reconstruct after this.

good luck

Make sure you have enableUV on in the texture window

ummmm… i dont want to sound ungratful but i’m not at all familiar with uv’s.:o i have got as far as enabling uv’s in the texture window. lol. the only 3d program i have got to grips with is zbrush and i dont have much knowlage as far as 3d stuff is concerned… but i’m a fast learner and if somone could give me a quick idiots guide as to how i can apply uv’s so i can delete the hands and then reconstruct the subdivisions i would be in your debt.

anyone:(

As far as I am aware UVs are only need to be enabled in order to reconstruct subdivision levels, but do not influence the function. However, just because you have UVs enabled does not mean you can succesfully reconstruct subdivision levels.

Imagine you have 4 polygons in subdivision level 1. Level 2 will then have 16 polygons. If you remove subdivision level 1 and delete 1,2 or 3 polygons from level 2 you cannot reconstruct the previous subdivision level. Deleting multiples of 4 polygons from subdivision level 2 may allow you to reconstruct, but not always. For example, if you have 16 polygons layed out in a square shape and remove 1 polygon from each corner you cannot reconstruct.

To see if you can reconstruct (on PC ZBrush 3.1), go to the lowest subdivision level, press Tool > Texture > EnableUV and then press Tool > Texture > AUVtiles to apply an automatic UV layout. Then try reconstructing subdivision levels.

If that does not work you might have to bite the bullet and delete polygons a little closer to the hand for the body SubTool and a little further up the arm for the hand SubTool. Then manually move the vertices back into place.

If you do not already do so then use SubTool Master for duplicating the subtools. Makes life much easier.

Ive been unsuccessful with ZBrushs UV thus far though, but you should be
able to Layout your UV base on polygroup, and from there ZBrush will compute SubDiv Reconstruction base on the UV`s island.

Again, Im not sure about this. so dont expect much.

cheers guys. that has actually made alot of sense. i think i’m going to go with TVeyes and bite the bullet tho. i have spent to long worying over this and there should be enough polys left in the higher subdivisions to streach out and resculpt the forarms. thanks for the educating tho, it’s always good to have an understanding of the mechanics of things. cant wait to push on with this sculpt and unleash it’s gory violence onto the zbrush community:D

 Yeah, bite that bullet !!

Sometimes the best course of action is to take two steps back, remember what you learned and step forward again.

I like the sketch btw. Made me think of Metal Gear Solid 1 (on PSone). Looking forward to whatever you come up with.
