I need help! What am I doing wrong?

I recently posted my latest creature on here but got no replies. When I look at almost everyone else’s work on here or in any other forum it is very apparent to me that i must be doing something wrong, the quality of either my renders or my models just never match the quality of others, can someone help me identify the areas i need to work on and maybe pass on some overall advice as to how I would do so? I would be extremely grateful.

Here is my latest portfolio:

Thanks

You won’t always get replies or comments. Asking for them helps.

Why wont i?

Most posts with comments aren’t really anything…a bunch of nice work, yada yada… the posts where someone is asking for critique are the ones where you will see posts where people are critiquing.

If you want advice on what to improve on you’ll need to give more information, like what you want to achieve. Are you planning to be a character artist, environment, etc. From your site I’ll gather character artist.

So with that, you need to study your basic facial forms more. It looks like you’re sculpting from memory more than from reference. Your bat dude is decent, but you’re missing actual webbing in the wings. Your anatomy on the leg doesn’t match any actual dog legged animal, you have 2 knee joints from the looks of it and your calf muscles are at a joint. Some of your forearm muscles are twisted too far. Your cut at the hip is far too strong.

Your Anatomy study is decent, but the same problems from your bat guy are here as well…they might actually be the same mesh just re purposed for the bat guy. The pose is awkward and unnatural. Your feet are too small. He has a huge ass.

There, now after all that critique, you’re actually not bad, you just have some stuff to learn yet. You’re off to a better start than most. As for renders, not everyone renders in Zbrush, and those that do composite the hell out of their renders in post.

Your presentation leaves something to be desired in my opinion. Your bat guy has his ear getting cut off, you crowd your edges on every image.

Eh, my 2 cents, anyway, keep it up.

Thank you, I will definitely take into consideration what you said, I want to be a character artist but I am updating my portfolio to show I have other skills as well so i can broaden my job opportunities.

On my portfolio the only model that i intended to have realistic head and face proportions is the head on the anatomy study, the others are very stylized and were born basically of sketches that i just took further.

As for the Bat the wings, they are meant to be used more as weapons like Marcus from Underworld 2, that is why there is no membrane between them, i added some fine winkling to the underside of the wings limbs to indicate where webbing could fold from or perhaps have been in the past. Ill admit i kind of took a guess with the leg anatomy too, it was hard to bled the quads or a human with the rest of the dog leg anatomy.

Ill fix what you said about the anatomy study. I have been doing this for about 6 years now, i know my presentation is awful but i just dont know how to fix it.

Thanks for the critique you have helped allot. I’ll never stop learning anyway.
