Is it possible that edgeloop is actually a gigantic spiral, which is why deleting it deletes the entire thing? ZRemesher has improved since the early days, but its still not immune to creating spirals.

It works OK for me. Test it on a Ring3D mesh and see if it works. That should prove it’s just your mesh.
Nah, its a spiral. Well, good thing is, it’s not a bug. I’m just inexperienced with zremesher. didn’t know my workflow could come to a halt because of it. And, I don’t know how to fix it.
Try Frame Mesh to create a curve in the Stroke palette then use CurveTubes brush to create the trim when you click on the curve.
