Following the Zshere tutorial http://www.pixologic.com/zclassroom/homeroom/tutorial.php?lesson=zspheres
after using the Armature brush to draw out a wavy line, they have you click ALT +Shift, and left click/drag along the area to straighten.
Sounds good, works fine in the demo but when I try it I get the blue outer brush ring, the small red inner ring and the minus sigh, just like the video.
But I cannot move the lines! I am in Edit/Draw mode. What could I be doing wrong?

Now…are you supposed to be able to change the line of zsheres to ANY angle, or are we constrained by the initial basic angle? I getting kind of hit and miss results.
Just use the Move tool to move the end sphere where you want and repeat the above process.
Yes, as zber2 says, just switch to Move mode (hotkey W) and move the end zsphere. Switch back to Draw mode (Q) and repeat the smoothing. The smoothing line is always from your starting point to the end of the stroke.
