I can only edit my subtools edges?

i am new to z brush and its forums so correct me if i have posted in the wrong section,

i am making a man and i have used the extract feature to make a shirt and a jacket but when i made my shorts, i can only change the color of the edges and edit the edges? i have deleted and re masked and re extracted but it does the same thing.

what did i do wrong?

Go to Tool > Masking and click ‘Clear’ button or hold down Ctrl and click+drag on an empty part of the canvas. When you Extract, it leaves the mask on so you have to clear the mask.
