HP slate and Tablet PCs

I’m wondering if anyone has tested zbrush out on either the HP slate, or any other tablet computers. Its my ongoing hope to run zbrush while traveling by subway, at the zoo, or just in bed before I fall asleep. The HP slate’s specs seem too low to run zbrush 4, but maybe an older version (3.1 maybe?). If another light weight tablet PC is out there that fits the bill- I’d like to hear recommendations.

Thank you for advice in advance.
Craig

ZBrush’s minimum and recommended requirements can be found here: http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/system/ So long as the device falls within that, you should be ok.

Earlier versions of ZBrush are not supported and no longer available…

Thank you for the quick reply Aurick. I did take a glance at the zbrush min requirements- but one thing I am unclear on is the processor. The HP slate runs on an Intel Atom (never heard of it before):

  • Processor make: Intel
  • CPU family: Atom
  • CPU model: Z540
  • Processor speed: 1.86 GHz
  • Cache size: 512 KB L2 cache
My guess is that it doesn’t march Z4s needs- but if anyone thinks it can- please let me know. I guess I had assumed if I had an old install disc for Z2 or Z3 I could reinstall on the slate and get the code from pixologic- I guess that is not the case.

Craig

yeah I wouldn’t run zbrush on an atom, but there are plenty of good cheap tablets that will work I myself use a tecra M7-S7331 , look for one that is penabled (has wacoms pressure sensativity). Once you get it just install the penabled driver as they never seem to have it installed.

Anything that’s a core duo 1.8ghz and up runs zbrush 4 fairly decent. Although 3gb of ram is ideal if it doesn’t have that already.

Thanks crumbaker. I think I could buy the HP slate (only $800) on a whim- but I will have to do some research if I’m going to invest into a better model. I’m sure what I want is out there- mostly something light weight, on screen keyboard (basically a slate rather then a tablet), and is runs/interacts with zbrush well. I’ve found a few models I like so fart- maybe I will post again when if I make a decision.

Thank you again
Craig

I hope its okay to bother you like this- but I have a question regarding the keybord on your tecra. When in slate mode (keyboard hidden) can you access an alt, cntrl, shft, or any other function keys? just wondering if you have to open the tablet up everytime you want to adjust something.

Craig

You have to map the buttons to do those functions but it was easy to do on this tablet, I’ve heard other models having problems. Only issue I ran into was clicking the joystick would turn the windows button on but I think that might be because the person who had this before me put on a separate keyboard that originally belonged to a different model laptop and the keys stick out a bit.

Thank you very much- I’m going to keep up the search, but you’ve given me some useful insight. If you, or anyone, has other reccomedations- I’m all ears.

Thank you

I have a Le1700 and use it for Zbrush and Painting.
Here is a little video I did showing it

LE1700 with Zbrush and Paint Tool sai

Performance is acceptable (4 gb or RAM).
Biggest issue are the lack of buttons for shortcuts but with a costumizable UI its usable.

Thanks- that video is really helpful. Some am I understanding you right- you have no buttons at all? It looks like you are able to alt click- does that mean you are clicking using the pen or do you have side buttons like on a Cintique? Once again- very helpful.
Craig

I’m still in the same boat- just when I think I’ve made a decision… I start to rethink- but I’m glad to be getting so much advice. I have a chance to buy the LE1700 at $700, a T5010 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz processor 4GB Ram 160GB Hard Drive at $665, or a fully equipped HP tm2 for $700. I was originally leaning toward the LE1700 due to price, weight, screen, and scale… but with the listed TM2 deal and a T5010 at $665 I’m rethinking. Any opinions? My main concern about the TM2 is viewing angles, size/weight of the T5010 is an issue, and of course I’m worried about the power of the LE1700.

Can anyone tell me how well zbrush will run on a 12.1” WXGA (1280 X 800) LED? The minimum system specs suggest 1024x768 monitor resolution (32 bits)… so I am assuming anything higher and we are good, yes?
