How To: Use Zapplink on Mac's Without Crashing

Hi Jason,
Thanks for helping out, much appreciated. I posted previously, the steps I use to recreate. Do you need any other specific information? Also, are there any other people that can help out with this from Pixologic, or the forum base?
Best,
Jacques

Try this for me, so we can talk aples to apples.

  1. Open Zbrush
  2. Select a plane, convert to polymesh, select polymesh
  3. draw on canvas, goto edit mode
  4. set a texture/colour/resolution
  5. under Tool>Texture, choose GUV
  6. Jump into Projection Master
  7. Select ZappLink
  8. Ensure you have the proper layer selected to paint on in PS/Gimp/whathaveyou
  9. do something funky
  10. save
  11. return to Zbrush
  12. accept update
  13. jump out of Projection Master
  14. rotate your object around in 3d space
Let me know when and if it dies…

Hi Jason,
Great thinking, apple to apples it is then. I crash after Step 7-8. I assume you are still selecting the mode in Zbrush in Step 8. And in Step 9, one is in Photoshop? If that is the case, hitting The OK button in Step 8 crashes Zbrush.
Best,
Jacques

OK, actually step 8 is in Photoshop or whatever app.

So this tells me, you either have an issue with the plugin or on issue with the OS.

OK, try deleting the preferences for Zbrush and for PS. Also try deleting the ZappLink plugin and make sure to download the latest version, go through the thread to be sure as I think an update or two were introduced at some point.

One of the things that may be the problem if you are on an Intel machine is that you are running out of RAM. As Zbrush/PS/Rosetta are using it all up under emulation. If your on a PowerPC machine, give me the vital stats will you…

Hello,
Thank you for you help. For me, it crash always after step 13…

mbrunsteig, following my test routine, you get the issue after step 13, ok, can you give me some system specs as well.

Then we’ll see if another test will be of help.

Hopefully I can figure something out for you guys today, as tomorrow I’m off for some relaxation for 2 weeks.

Ok Jason,

Here are a few lines of the report of the last crash…
I hope it will help you…
Thanks

Hi,
Could you let me know where to delete the preferences for both programs? In Zbrush, I went to Prefs>InitZbrush. In Photoshop, its a fresh install as of yesterday. Attached is pic of the mac, any other stats that you need?
Best,
Jacques

Thanks guys, I will see what I can sort out for you. Don’t get too excited, I leave tomorrow late for a little quality time. If I can figure it out tonight or early tomorrow I will post something for you.

Have either of you tried Zapplink with another app, other than PS? Lie something built in, like Preview? Just to see if it’s a PS issue, either an update or perhaps a lack of?

Hi Jason,
Thanks for going through the effort to troubleshoot. If anyone out there knows how to fix this issue, I invite them to chime in on this thread.
Best,
Jacques

Same as I remember, I die at step 13. I get my PS texture on the model, attempt to exit projection master (pick up my model)… see the interface for a split second and then have a unexpected quit and am looking at the desktop.

I think the answer is probably very simple. Your pathname has underscores: Adobe_Photoshop_CS2

Try renaming it to AdobePhotoshopCS2 or PhotoshopCS2 or just Photoshop.

Hello,

In my message from yesterday, I’ve sent the bug report. As you can see, there are no _ in the name’s path. And the problem is always the same…quit at step 13…

Mystère…mystère…

mbrunsteig, the info you provided is somewhat helpful but is not actually telling us anything. The name issues Aurick is mentioning is for your apps, like PS. As I’ve mentioned, this seems to be a system issue, not a Zbrush issue asw I have tested it running on several machines. Now I don’t use PS, haven’t in many years. I’ll spare everyone the reasons.

mbrunsteig, can you have Zapplink use another app to test, so all the same stpes, but use Preview and alter the image colour with the built in tools, then save it back to Zbrush. This will tell me something…

Jason,

I had changed the names of folders and applications, removing all special signs, a few days ago.

Now, I’ve tried Zapplink with Painter and/or GraphicConverter from PM: in these cases, I can’t see the modifications from PM > Painter or GG, only from these applications > PM… this was not the case using PS.
But Zbrush continue to quit after step 13 when trying to drop from PM.

I don’t really anderstand what you mean with:
“… use Preview and alter the image colour with the built in tools, then save it back to Zbrush” In Zbrush or in PS ?

Thank you for your answer

Sorry,
but now the situation is exactly the same with Painter or with Photoshop. I can see the modifications in both directions… PM <> Painter or PS

But quit after step 13…

Hi,
Thanks for chiming in, I have definitely tried a few variations on the naming convention, underscores, noSpaces, just photoshop as you mentioned. Attached is a pic of the latest naming structure. It still crashes at Jason’s step 7-8 as before.

As I mentioned previously, after each renaming, I delete the externalEditor file path text document in the Zbrush Data folder just to ensure it’s freshly initialized. Before relaunching Zbrush and reassigning the path.

Best,
Jacques

ZAppExternalEditorPath.TXT:
/Applications/Photoshop/Photoshop.app/

noSpaces.jpg

OK thanks guys, that’s helping me at least localize what to look at for you.

Of course it would be way too easy for both of you to have the issue at the same place. I’ll work on this, or perhaps someone will figure it out. I probably won’t get back to you today as I’m baking bread and cookies.

I will try to address this sometime over my holidays and check back.

Hello Jason & Jacques,

This time, I’ve found something very interesting!

It works!!!

It’s perhaps not ideal, but here is my imperfect solution:
I’ve taken all the scripts away from the Zplug folder except ZApplink… then restarting Zbrush, creating a volume > Edit > PM > ZApplink > PS > PM > pickup…and…no crash!!
Youpii!!
But now it remains us to find what’s the script who creates this problem :+1:

Y’a de l’espoir

OK cool! Add one back at a time, trying it each time! Let us know.
