How to setup a single front view image plane?

I’m trying to do something seamingly very simple but it’s giving me fits. I need to put a plane object with a texture on it in the background as a reference to sculpt with. I have read through the “Modelling a skull with image planes” but I only have a front on image to work with so I don’t need two planes. I have tried to make a plane, convert it to a poly mesh, put the texture on it then append my mesh as a subtool. This isn’t working…If I pick my mesh in the subtools it still moves or rotates the plane as well. Thanx for any help.

The plane and your mesh need to be subtools of the same tool. When you perform a deformation, it will only effect the active subtool.

Hope that helps.

ok…Lemms see…I should have 3 items in my subtools? If my image plane and my mesh are subtools of a tool what should my main/root tool be? Confused. Sometimes I wish I had no prior 3D experience because I think it screws me up in ZB. I’m still thinking in the 3D Max mode. Thanx for your help Dustin.

when you boot Zbrush…

tool>loadtool>image plane X

there is a .psd that comes with the file.
open it in PS
there is a front, and side view
place the images you need where they go.

apply that as a texture in Zbrush.
subD up the image plane X to around 500k
tool>texture>“txr>col”

then append your mesh as a subtool.
make your new mesh active
turn on transparency (on the right hand side)

you can adjust the settings for the transparency in
preferences>draw

hope that helps.

Ok…I see how that works. You actually want your model and your xplane to rotate together in this instance. One more question…How can I get my xplane to have a flat color and my mesh not inherit that same material? Thanx guys this has helped alot.
