How to scatter small things onto a surface?

Is there a right way to do it? Pebbles ,small twigs etc. on a ground or something similar? I tried micro mesh but not sure it’s a proper way or maybe I am missing something. Beside it’s very hard to control their appearance that way.

I am basically search for something like a hose brush from Painter, both to scatter geometry and alpha displaced things. Would be appreciated for any idea.

I saw someone use Projection master… turn on deformation only,
pick/choose a sphere (as an base mesh) then use the rectangle brush and draw on surface this wil scatter multiply sphere’s.
Then pick up projection master (press G) then go and deform sphere’s with other brushes such as …clay tube/ flatten
brushes to make some pebbles.

Thanks for the advice, decorix. But I had a hope for some true geometry way, preferably to get the scattered things as a separate subtool.
