How to give subtools separate materials

I am just playing with ImageplaneX and am an absolute newbie…
It seems however all the tutorials I have checked out are from a previous version of Zbrush and enough has changed to throw me off…

basically I have applied a texture to my image planeX and assigned a flat color material…I then did a polypaint from texture on the ImagePlaneX…

Then when i bring in my model, I would like to assign a different material to it, but when i select a different material…it changes the material on my ImagePlaneX…how do i keep this from happening.

Obviously I do not have a clear understanding of how a material is applied in Zbrush and when that is baked in.

Thanks

This goes for any tool or subtool.

Select it (in this case, your plane)
Select m (material) at the top where mrgb and rgb are
Select the flat material you want to fill it with
Go to color>fill object (top menu)

Because you are in “m”, it fills that particular object with the material only. If you select another material, only objects that haven’t been filled with a mat. will change.

If you want to fill an object with a color only, just do that in rgb, or in mrgb to fill it with the color AND material. This is also how you paint. In other words, you can paint various materials and/or colors directly onto an object with brushes as well.

Groovy stuff

ok…I think I’m getting it…
so when selecting materials thats sort of like a preview until you actually fill object…

thanks…slowly making sense

Yeah, and a lot of people like set their materials in other programs. So the advantage for that is you can freely switch your materials and matcaps to get different lighting on your sculpt. I often switch between the matcap white, red wax, and some other ones I’ve downloaded. It helps you visualize the form quicker, and check for weaknesses in the sculpt.
