How to get fine detail in inlays created with polygroup or masks

I am trying to create fine jewelry with ZBrush. It’s working for the most part but when I try to create inlay or sunken designs that need straight edges on the surface of a piece I get these weird imperfections. I try to use polygroup functions and adjust the smooth control or up the resolution, mask and use deformation menu but not much success. I wonder if this is only possible in HD res. My computer is not very powerful but I still think I can do it. Please advice…

Thank you

It would be best if you could show what you’re getting now, and what you’re trying to get?

I added this little video. It doesn’t let you see well what I’m doing but in a nut shell I want to carve this cross down on the surface but not happy with the edges which are full of imperfections and when trying to use the smooth brush it flattens everything down. So I need to carve straight nice edges and lines…

Thanks

Use a high resolution alpha 1024px or 2048px. Try to blur your mask than inflate and play with the deformation-polish by features or polish crisp edge settings. You could also try projection master to get better results.
