How to fix Holes in Dynamesh

Hi, I’m sorry if this has been asked a million times. I chose the “thick_plane” and turned it into a 500 res. dynamesh. I then divide the mesh (CTRL + Drag) and it gave me holes.

  1. How can I fix this. Is the “Inflat” tool the best method to fix the holes. I didn’t want to sculpt over what I have already. :frowning:

  2. How can I prevent this from happening in the first place?

Thanks

Did you just blob on the plane with the clay buildup brush or what? Move and move topological work nice
It appears you’re trying to model terrain. Have you tried moving points with the ZModeler brush? Many methods can be used, sometimes a different approach yields better results.

Doug, thanks for the landcscape link. very helpful. I have read all of the Dynamesh tutorial and yet there was no info relating to my problem. I still need my original question answered if you have a solution. Thanks.

dynamesh uses a mesh’s volume to generate geometry. Your mesh doesn’t have any volume so it thinks you’re trying to cut a whole through something. Basically, A flat plane will always fail.

Create an extraction of your mesh with some thickness and then try using dynamesh. Personally I would just put a cube in place, subD up the mesh and then use project all to get back to where I needed to be.

Thanks Beta_Channel. I purposely used the “thick_plane” so it did have some volume. It wasn’t just a plane so I don’t know why it failed still (holes) but I will follow your steps and try to fix. Thanks.

So for future reference. How do we get around this? I mean if I want to sculpt on a plane does it just need to be “thicker” than the default “thick_plane.bpr” or is there a better method?

Your thick plane wasn’t thick enough because you didn’t have backface masking turned on. So all of your sculpted detail is mirrored on the inside.

Turn on backface masking when you work so you’re creating volume as you pull away from the surface rather than just pulling the underside up as well.
