How to fill Hollowed Sculpt

Hello:

I have a sculpt I made that I hollowed for 3D printing. I put it away for a month or 2 and had it saved on dropbox. I subsequently accidentally erased the unhollowed version. I need to remaked the hollowed form with thicker walls because the printer rejects it for thin walls.

Is there a way to fill the void in the hollowed version … if not is there a way to thicken the hollowed version only on the inside?

Thanks in advance.

If you turn on polyframes (Shift+f) you should see that the exterior is a separate polygroup to the interior. You can then select just the exterior by Shift+Ctrl+clicking and then delete the hidden geometry. You should then be able to close the base hole using “Close Holes”.

Thanks Marcus – that looks like it’s going to work.

So it didn’t already have the interior highlighted as a polygroup and I’m struggling to select the interior of the model. There are many options to polygroup grouping, what would you suggest?

Can you show a picture with polygroups on?

Marcus - It’s just one polygroup … I’ve been reading and I think I can group by visible to give me an interior polygroup.

I don’t think that will work but try this:

  1. Paint a narrow mask around the hole.
  2. Invert the mask (Tool>Masking>Inverse).
  3. Hide the unmasked part (Tool>Visibility>HidePt).
  4. Delete the hidden polys (Tool>Geometry>Modify Topology>Del Hidden).

This should now have separated the inner part from the outer part.

  1. Press Tool>Polygroups>Auto Groups. This should make the inside and outside different groups.
  2. Shift+Ctrl+click the outside. The inside should now be hidden and can be deleted.

Thanks again … I really appreciate your help!

Everything worked until:

  1. Press Tool>Polygroups>Auto Groups. This should make the inside and outside different groups. (It grouped everything together)

As you can see I have a big hole in the bottom of my skull here and there are 2 separate areas but one polygroup.

PS: OK I was able to get the 2 separate polygroups using group by normals instead:

Now I’m having issues with:
6. Shift+Ctrl+click the outside. The inside should now be hidden and can be deleted. (nothing seems to happen)

If Auto Groups didn’t work it probably means that the inside is still connected to the outside. That’s problematic. I’m not sure Group By Normals will have worked exactly as you want…

So after Shift+Ctrl+clicking do two polygroups still show? They shouldn’t.

If you felt like uploading the file to Dropbox or somewhere, I’ll take a look.

I decided to start over your instructions and the second time I was able to delete the inside section and then close the hole. Thanks Loads!
